On 31 October, as part of the III International Scientific and Practical Conference of the MGIMO MFA of Russia ‘Digital International Relations 2024’, the MGIMO AI Centre organised a roundtable on ‘International AI Regulation: Is it Possible to Move Away from Fragmentation’.
The event, held in a hybrid format, focused on global initiatives to develop AI standards and approaches.
The meeting was moderated by A.V. Abramova, Director of the MGIMO AI Centre, Scientific Director of the AI Master's Programme, Ph.D. in Economics. Among the participants were representatives of MGIMO, the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, the HSE University and a number of other specialised centres. The presentations covered various aspects of regulation, including the international regulatory agenda for AI and approaches to creating industry standards. Experts discussed the role of the UN as a universal platform for interaction, the importance of the Future Summit and the Global Digital Compact. The issues of interaction between international organisations and prospects for overcoming fragmentation in AI regulation were also discussed.
The outcomes of the roundtable emphasised the importance of cooperation for the development of unified standards and strategies for AI regulation in the international arena. The experts expressed confidence in the need to strengthen co-operation for the successful development of the sphere.
