The AI Global Dimension Conference 2022
On December 8-9, the annual international conference on artificial intelligence, AI Global Dimension, took place at MGIMO. The event brought together representatives from academia, business, and government, contributing to the development of student research and business projects through the AI Showcase technology competition.
During the opening ceremony, a welcome speech was delivered by a representative from the Office of the President of the Russian Federation for the Development of Information and Communication Technologies and Communication Infrastructure, S.A. Zakharova.
On December 8th, in the session titled "Possibilities and Limitations of Soft Regulation in the Field of AI," speakers discussed the current status and prospects of ethical regulation of artificial intelligence in Russia and abroad, the significance of the national AI Ethics Code, and its development.
Sergey Nakvasin, the Director of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence Development under the Government of the Russian Federation, spoke about regulatory frameworks for AI, changes in the regulatory landscape over the past two years, and the importance of introducing ethical and regulatory principles and their development. Aleksandr Sazhinov, the First Secretary of the Department of Information and Press at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, shed light on the main directions of supranational regulation in the AI field, emerging approaches, and associated risks. Maria Suragina, the Head of the AI Regulation Department at the GR Group, discussed the key aspects of implementing the Russian AI Ethics Code — signing rounds, expansion perspectives, and the importance of promoting it at different levels. Vyacheslav Glushchenko, the Director of the Center for Global IT Cooperation, highlighted the importance of AI regulation topics in the context of IGF work, where 30% of sessions were related to these technologies.
On December 9th, two sessions were held in the business and science domains — "New Development Avenues for Digital Business — Adaptation Opportunities" and "Technological Innovations in Higher Education."
The main topics of discussion in the session about digital business development were government support, online exports, metaverses, AI in media and energy. As a result, it was decided to hold a round table discussion in the spring dedicated to metaverses in different sectors. The discussion on metaverse development and status was initiated by the CEO of the RTVI group, O. Piven.
Issues related to technology use in education, digital teaching, metaverses in education, the roles of AI in education, and the challenges faced by education today were central during the session dedicated to educational innovations. The discussion sparked active participation from attendees, and a joint decision was made to hold an event on the role of metaverses in education in 2023.
The closing event of AI Global Dimension on December 9th was the student AI Showcase. In the context of this technology project showcase competition, participants presented projects aimed at improving the university using digital technologies. The best projects focused on digitizing MGIMO, including creating mobile apps, chatbots, and networking platforms to optimize the learning process and student interactions.
An important part of the conference was the establishment of a partnership with StormCorp, with joint projects planned in collaboration with the "Artificial Intelligence" master's program at MGIMO.
AI Global Dimension was organized by the Center for Artificial Intelligence at MGIMO.
