Round Table discussion: "Capabilities of Metaverses and Their Prospects for Utilization in the Media Space"
On May 17th, a round table discussion titled "Possibilities of Metaverses and Their Prospects for Utilization in the Media Space" took place, organized by the Center for Artificial Intelligence at MGIMO. The moderator for the event was the director of the Center and the academic supervisor of the "Artificial Intelligence" master's program, A.V. Abramova.
During the session, experts discussed the current status of metaverses' development in Russia and the world, as well as raised questions about regulatory constraints associated with them. The participants also highlighted the prospects of metaverses for the media space. The round table participants also touched on the interaction between metaverses and artificial intelligence.
"At the moment, the development of metaverses is in an active stage. The gaming format of interaction with the environment is particularly relevant and aimed at the Z generation," stated Maxim Kozlov, the head of the AR/VR laboratory at Sberbank.
Yaroslav Skvortsov, the dean of the Faculty of International Journalism at MGIMO, noted that the metaverse space is quite contradictory in current realities, as is its interaction with the media, "because the media plays the role of an external observer but is also an independent author." Regarding artificial intelligence, Yaroslav Skvortsov emphasized its ability to "filter out informational noise." The expert also delved into the concepts of media thinking and consciousness manipulation. Concluding the discussion, Yaroslav Skvortsov shared his personal definition of the metaverse: "It's a three-dimensional tangle of contradictions," declared the dean.
